Designed from a young users point of view, this early learning centre is central to the growing Green Square village in Sydney’s south, part of the award-winning adaptation of the former South Sydney Hospital site.

  • Adaptation of the 1930s heritage outpatients wing has taken the building function and feel far beyond its institutional austerity. The new wing is grafted onto the original building shell with entry, play space and wraparound verandah so that indoor play rooms extend seamlessly out to the veranda and central play space of sensory pathways through gardens.

‘This stunning new community facility in the heart of Green Square town centre is less than a 10-minute walk from the train station, library and plaza’ –Clover Moore, Sydney Lord Mayor

  • Roof details have been reconfigured to bring beautiful natural light into the playrooms, lined with timber panelling and plywood. Furnishings and fixtures are of natural textures and rich colours. For discovery-based learning, the outdoor play space features raised veggie gardens, outdoor kitchens and digging patches.

As well as fun, sustainability is at the heart of the adaptation.

  • A range of reuse and sustainability measures in the adaptation include passive solar and natural ventilation, reuse of demolished brick sections for paving, hydronic floor heating, a heat-recovery air-conditioning system, solar power generation, rainwater collection and bicycle storage.
