An early learning centre where in-door/outdoor play meets refined detailing and a child-friendly, fun material palette. It caters to some pretty demanding customers – children aged 6 weeks to 6 years.

  • Adaptation of an outpatients building at the old South Sydney Hospital adds a new wing, to the reimagined building. A wraparound verandah links the two, offering a series of different play spaces, inside and out. Careful consideration was given to both the child and career experience.

Designed to surprise and delight, the Centre also reinterprets the site history.

  • Original interiors are now light-filled open playrooms, courtesy of skylights fitted into with existing roof cowls, with exposed steel trusses to outline the existing building. The old building is punctuated wth openings onto the verandah, extending play outdoors, but still undercover.

A playful interior palette blends the warmth of plywood with colour accents.

  • Internally, old and new are unified using a base palette of plywood and timber-panelled joinery, with colour highlights. Where possible, original materials are repurposed in the Centre: bricks and timber became paving and cladding. Sustainable design will ensure the Centre’s longevity and reduce its running costs.
