Part of Rockdale Council’s revitalisation of Cook Park beachfront in Sydney's south, a series of five amenities blocks built over five years brought a distinctive and fresh identity to the area.

We worked closely with Rockdale Council to design a total of five public amenities blocks, four new buildings, and reworking a 1960s toilet block. Apart from providing safe new amenities for the community, a broader objective was to upgrade the beachfront promenade.

We saw the opportunity to move the public toilet typology away from the isolated eyesores of old, to a more dignified set of structures that also serve as welcome landmarks along the beachfront.

The design focus was on sustainability and natural materials, which include reclaimed timbers and sculptured concrete panels, assembled to bring natural light and air through the facilities. Together they are a rhythmic series of forms that delightfully synchronise, while offering colour-coded differentiation from one block to another.
