Part of Rockdale Council’s revitalisation of Cook Park beachfront in Sydney's south, a series of five amenities blocks built over five years brought a distinctive and fresh identity to the area.

  • We worked closely with Rockdale Council to design a total of five public amenities blocks, four new buildings, and reworking a 1960s toilet block. Apart from providing safe new amenities for the community, a broader objective was to upgrade the beachfront promenade.

  • We saw the opportunity to move the public toilet typology away from the isolated eyesores of old, to a more dignified set of structures that also serve as welcome landmarks along the beachfront.

  • The design focus was on sustainability and natural materials, which include reclaimed timbers and sculptured concrete panels, assembled to bring natural light and air through the facilities. Together they are a rhythmic series of forms that delightfully synchronise, while offering colour-coded differentiation from one block to another.
