For the oceanside suburb of Little Bay, in Sydney’s southeast, Solis apartments introduced a strong urban aesthetic and benchmark quality to the new residential landscape.

-
Part of the wider Little Bay community, Solis occupies a rare ocean-front site, exposed to a spectacular yet unforgiving coastline. The challenge was to design a 45-apartment village that moved beyond the lazy ‘summer holiday’ mindset, where a water view often forgives ill-considered design.

Solis was one of the last projects of the 13.6-hectare redeveloped site of the old Prince Henry Hospital. It distinguishes itself with sculptural forms and a tough, urban materiality that guards against the elements. Its banded concrete structures are tailored with steel cladding and screens, while interiors feature finely crafted natural timbers that breath.

Its orientation and linear form takes advantage of northerly sun year-round to help with passive heating and cooling. A dual aspect for all apartments helps capture coastal breezes and views east to the ocean and west to Botany Bay. Eco-conscious design has minimised environmental impact of the project by reducing material waste, energy and water consumption, and the harvesting/management of stormwater and rainwater on site.
