Mosman Bay House
On a Sydney Harbourside site, the south-facing aspect and steep topography are used tactically to create water and garden views from each room.
In a quiet waterfront setting, this house was all about capturing the panoramic views over Mosman Bay to Sydney Harbour. A main south-facing aspect is considered not ideal by some, however, we find it lovely for the soothing, gentle light. Our design and material palette play nicely with that element.
The plan utilises the steep site contours to frame harbour views from each room, while bringing north sun in through a series of interior courtyards. A two-storey void at the centre of the plan divides the garden-level public spaces, and anchors itself with a monumental sandstone wall bathed in light.
Living spaces open seamlessly to the contained garden terrace and horizon-edge pool.
Private rooms upstairs cantilever quietly over the garden terrace, projecting prow-like towards the harbour.
Warm natural materials include handmade bricks, skilfully cut sandstone, timber joinery, limestone flooring and aged brass architectural hardware. These combine to create a modern, timeless, and relaxed home that responds to its privileged site, on the edge of Sydney Harbour.
