Mosman Bay House

On a Sydney Harbourside site, the south-facing aspect and steep topography are used tactically to create water and garden views from each room.

  • In a quiet waterfront setting, this house was all about capturing the panoramic views over Mosman Bay to Sydney Harbour. A main south-facing aspect is considered not ideal by some, however, we find it lovely for the soothing, gentle light. Our design and material palette play nicely with that element.

  • The plan utilises the steep site contours to frame harbour views from each room, while bringing north sun in through a series of interior courtyards. A two-storey void at the centre of the plan divides the garden-level public spaces, and anchors itself with a monumental sandstone wall bathed in light.

Living spaces open seamlessly to the contained garden terrace and horizon-edge pool.

Private rooms upstairs cantilever quietly over the garden terrace, projecting prow-like towards the harbour.

  • Warm natural materials include handmade bricks, skilfully cut sandstone, timber joinery, limestone flooring and aged brass architectural hardware. These combine to create a modern, timeless, and relaxed home that responds to its privileged site, on the edge of Sydney Harbour.
