A tri-level townhouse offers a blueprint for compact living. The sculpted copper-clad exterior and texturally rich interiors deftly balance natural light and privacy, opening to unexpected garden pockets and vistas.

A central courtyard brings light into the plan, discreetly dividing the living, dining, and kitchen zones.

  • A public walkway along one boundary required a defensive design approach. Organic geometries, strategic openings and landscape are used as filters for the exposed corner semi. Though small, it asserts its presence with a sandstone base and copper-clad upper level, curving to form a central courtyard and light well.

The small building manages itself with confidence on a very public site, while giving back to the streetscape.

  • Organised over three levels, each room has a unique garden connection. The street-level study/guest room opens to a front garden pocket. Living, dining and kitchen are garden fringed from the front north terrace to the dappled rear courtyard. A balcony off the upstairs master suite looks north into the forested gully.

  • Inside, materials match the sandstone and copper in strength. Exposed timber adds texture and warmth, a cool concrete floor streamlines the living level, and greenery infuses every space.
