In the historic Sydney suburb of Balmain, a family home is conceived as a walled garden with private, light-filled living spaces oriented to the landscape, carved into a compact site.

  • The leftover slice of a larger subdivision, this irregular site took careful planning to maximise privacy, light and views while minimising impact to its neighbours. The challenge was to wrap these constraints within a cohesive design language. Landscape was fundamental to the plan.

Nothing in the design is random or overly complicated – it all responds to constraints and opportunities inherent in the site.

  • Ground-floor living areas open to the garden. Upstairs, the building responds to its site, cranked to preserve privacy and frame district views towards Anzac Bridge, with strategic openings to draw natural light and air into the plan.

Underscoring a relationship between the levels are timber-lined ceilings and staircase.
